Exciting Expansions in Waldameer's Future

To contact us Click HERE

We just reported on Waldameer Amusement Park's 2013 expansion plans recently, but now we have even more exciting news to cover about the future of the Erie, PA park.

A local news story has detailed the park's plan to spend $20 million expanding over the next ten years, something they will be able to do due to the purchase of more than seven acres of land surrounding the current property.

Waldameer has been a bit blocked in their desire to grow by the need to conserve all current parking areas.  But now all that has changed.  Here's a map to help see what they've gained:

First, the red section is a large area that the park has purchased.  It consists of The Inn at Presque Isle, which the park will operate for now, a small trailer park which sounds like it will eventually go, and some cabins that will immediately go.

The larger red area with green lines is slated for possible purchase in the future by the park.

The orientation of the new land is great, it would allow the park to push the parking lots outward and expand the park proper into the current parking area.

An item that the park has already outlined their desire to build is in blue, and that's a wave pool.  I know the park has wanted one for ages, but the space was the issue.  I totally guessed at the orientation, but from the article it sounds like it'll go in the general area I placed it.  A children's water play are will also be added there.

The yellow square is property the park already owns, which is down a steep hill and is lakefront property, and will use an inclined railway to connect to the park proper.  The area will include "among other attractions, the incline railway, another water ride, a family ride, a restaurant and a picnic area."  Swimming probably won't be included in the area, but it is going to be quite beautiful, no doubt!

Though it has been a few years since I visited Waldameer, it was a great traditional park.  I can only imagine what other rides and attractions the owners will add as time goes by.  Exciting news!

The removal of Perilous Plunge has dramatically changed the view along the Boardwalk section of Knott's Berry Farm, as seen in this photo tweeted by the park:

The removal of the Plunge was swift and harsh - the ride most certainly will not be appearing anywhere in the future except perhaps a recycling plant.  The new Boardwalk skyline is once again quite open, at least for now - just the tall palm trees mark the edge of the park.

While the photos are from last week, Westcoaster has a nice update that shows just how merciless the park was when removing the ride.  Rumors from a news story say that the ride's lagoon will remain, but no official confirmation has come from the park.  If you read the unofficial chatter on what will eventually fill the space it sounds like anything from a flat ride to a mega coaster.

Hopefully their announce their plans for the space soon!

Silver Dollar City has shared the exciting news with fans that they've placed the final track pieces on Outlaw Run, the park's extreme new wooden roller coaster.

With track now completed, the park will focus on finishing items such as permanently securing bolts and adding additional support structure.

The milestone of track completion also means that testing will be on the horizon, something we're all anxiously awaiting.

Outlaw Run features 2,937 feet of track, three inversions, and several other highly banked turns - exactly like those seen in the photos above.  The $10 million ride has a planned Spring 2013 opening.

One of Anton Schwarzkopf's most famous roller coasters, Shock Wave at Six Flags Over Texas, is currently receiving a fresh new paint job - and it's looking really good already!

Baynum Painting, a company that specializes in painting thrill rides across the country, is currently on site giving Shock Wave a fresh look.  Seen above are the ride's signature double loops sporting some brilliant green paint.  The contrast to the old paint is striking, no?

After checking out Baynum's blog a little further, I noticed this video showcasing some of the rides they've painted:

Pretty cool!  Many of the most popular rides we know and love have at one time or another been painted by the company.  It looks like Six Flags uses them pretty exclusively for work.

They are also reporting that they're moving on to Six Flags Over Texas' La Vibora next, which is a snake themed bobsled coaster.

Dolly Parton Out of Nashville Water/Snow Park Project

Dolly Parton has dropped out of a plan to create a water and snow park in Nashville, TN, a $50 million project that would have been build adjacent to the Opryland Resort & Convention Center.

The owner of the Opryland Resort, Gaylord Entertainment, recently had a restructuring approved by shareholders that will see the company emerge as a real estate trust, and the sale of their resort properties, including Opryland, to the Marriott Group.

The original plans for the water park and season snow park called for a 50/50 ownership between Gaylord and Dollywood Company.  With Gaylord radically changing their purpose, Dolly felt it was best to pull out of the deal.

“Gaylord makes decisions that they feel are good for their company and their stockholders, and I have to make decisions based on what is best for me and the Dollywood Company.  I think everyone knows I love Nashville, and I hope the work we’ve already done will spark more family entertainment in Nashville.”

Gaylord Entertainment, which will soon become Ryman Hospitality Properties Inc., says it is planning on finding another partner to move the project forward.

Wild Adventures Will Have Guests Spinning in 2013

Valdosta, Georgia's Wild Adventures Theme Park has announced two ride additions for the 2013 season, highlighted by a new thrill machine, Tail Spin.

Described by the park as "a rocking and spinning ride on a half-pipe that will take families more than four stories high while facing outward on a motorcycle-like seat," guests are certainly going to be taking a spin in 2013!

© Wild Adventures
The ride appears to be a Zamperla Mega Disk'O, a popular family thrill ride already with a great track record at many other parks.  The motorcycle style seats put riders facing outward as the ride spins, and gives a great sense of freedom while still feeling secure and snug.

The theme park will also add a new attraction that smaller guests will love, the Wacky Wheels.  A teacup style ride, Wacky Wheels will serve as an alternative for those who don't quite reach Tail Spin's 48 inch height requirement.

In 2012 Wild Adventures focused on beefing up the comfort factor of the park, including new paint on rides, new lounging areas, renovated food stands and other amenities such as new restrooms and live entertainment.

Crocodile Club gathers on September 7

Frank Nicastro and Richard Inglis, with a crocodile, at a Crocodile Club gahering  more than a decade ago.
Press release:
BRISTOL, CT – The Crocodile Club is back again this year and will be held at Lake Compounce on Friday, September 7, 2012. Lake Compounce General Manager Jerry Brick continues to support this event in the tradition established by the Norton family for Lake Compounce, the oldest continuously operating amusement park in the country. The Crocodile Club will celebrate its 131th reunion dinner with its unique gathering of individuals who put aside their political differences to celebrate this commitment by the park owners. Please join in, as a capacity turnout is expected.
As usual, the festivities will begin with the social hour at 1:00 P.M. (when crocodile tears are shed!). For early arrivers, a cash bar will be available from 12:00 noon onward upstairs in the ballroom. The traditional dinner of lamb and fried corn with all the trimmings, which was first served in 1875, will commence promptly at 2:00 PM. During dinner, Crocodile Club President, Ray Dunaway will preside over a lively and interesting program. Good speeches and bad jokes are limited to three minutes per person, and NO serious political speeches are allowed.
The “Crocodile Club” was formed in 1875 when Gad Norton, who was a former legislator, and who also started the amusement park in 1846, decided to thank his colleagues in the State Legislature for their help in passing a statute that changed the town line between Bristol and Southington so as to put his farmhouse in Bristol. The reason for this request was so that he could vote in Bristol where he did all his trading and knew more people. Also, in the days of horses and buggies, old dirt roads, and tough winters, the three mile ride to Bristol was a lot easier than the six miles to Southington.
You must come and learn all of the traditions, meet new and old friends, relish the unique menu, and shake hands with all the important politicians, including this year’s political candidates from all parties. Never will you see and meet so many candidates from all sides in one place in such intimate surroundings, all having a good time kidding each other, with no serious politics allowed. That policy was dictated to the original group by host, Gad Norton himself, who said, “There will be no serious politics allowed, no post-mortems from the last legislative session, -- just pleasant sociability, good fun, and good food.”
Guests will be accommodated on a first come, first served basis. A payment made payable to Crocodile Club for fifty dollars each must be received for each participant by August 20, 2012. Mail to the Crocodile Club, c/o Carousel Museum, 95 Riverside Ave, Bristol, CT 06010. The dinner registration form can be downloaded from the Carousel Museum website. www.thecarouselmuseum.org
Upon receipt of your payment, your name will be entered into the guest database and your ticket(s) will be mailed to you or they can be picked up at “will call” at the front gate. Transportation will be provided from the Lake Compounce parking lot to the main gate. You must have your ticket with you in order to get into the ballroom and get fed.
For tickets contact the New England Carousel Museum, 95 Riverside Avenue, Bristol, CT 06010. 860 585-5411.

GOP promises steps to put Bristol on right track

THURSDAY (8/16/2012) PRESS RELEASE

GOP: Budget remains top priority

On August 15, the City Council approved North Star, a marketing consultant company out of Nashville, TN, to carry out a comprehensive marketing campaign for the City. This campaign is a joint venture between North Star, businesses in the Chamber of Commerce, the Mayor’s Marketing Task Force, and the City. North Star’s consulting fees of $60,000 will be covered by donors from the business community and the City. North Star has developed a strong track record of working with states and municipalities to develop in-depth, comprehensive marketing strategies that are implementable. Our goal is to create a brand, a truly unique identity, for the city of Bristol that will provide greater economic development, satisfied residents, and attract more tourism opportunities. In order for this effort to be as successful as possible though, we must also fix our structural fiscal problems. The City once again faces a deficit between $7.5 and $12 million. How is it that after passing a six percent tax increase last year, the City remains in the red? Let us break down the budget process, how Bristol has gotten to this point, and the steps we have taken as the Council majority to get us back on track.
First and foremost, we’d like to explain the makeup of the Joint Board, and the process in which budgets are created and ultimately adopted. The Board of Finance and City Council form the Joint Board. Overall, 15 members make up the Joint Board, which consists of the six City Councilors and eight appointed, not elected, Board of Finance members. The Mayor also sits on the Board of Finance as the ninth member. The Board of Finance outnumbers the City Council, so as to make sure decisions are kept in the hands of financial experts and not politicians. It is the duty of the Board of Finance to hold budget workshops with City Departments to adopt a budget to bring to the Joint Board for approval.
Upon taking office in November 2011, the newly elected Republican majority on the City Council was presented with a budget deficit of $4 million. That number ballooned to a final total of $12.8 million after Department requests, healthcare increases and debt service payments. For years the City's Joint Board has not budgeted with the out years in mind. Zero-based budgets have not been utilized, and detailed monthly expenditure reports have yet to be instituted. The City has relied on Federal and State grants, ARRA money and borrowing from reserves to cover budget deficits, rather than making cuts or addressing the structural problems.
The reason we mention this is not to cast blame on past administrations, but rather to inform you of the circumstances surrounding the City’s structural budget issues and why we need significant changes going forward. To combat our budget issues, we, the majority on the City Council, proposed $1.5 million in simple cuts to the Joint Board. In addition, we charged City Hall with investigating department consolidation and privatization. Beyond this, we have proposed a new non-profit for parks improvement and maintenance, and commissioned a thorough review of the City’s current business incentives as compared to neighboring towns.
Unfortunately, the cuts we offered were voted down by the Joint Board, and our votes to reject a six percent tax increase were outvoted by the rest of the Joint Board. Consolidation and privatization research is still ongoing, although we anticipate a course of action to be drawn by Winter 2012. One bright spot is that the Parks Board has supported the non-profit donation fund to help support parks improvements and maintenance.
So where do we go from here? On Monday, August 20 we will unveil part two of this release, detailing the steps that will need to be taken in order to get Bristol back on the right track, and the benefits of doing so. Following that will be a series of Town Hall meetings to get feedback and to engage the public in this difficult, but crucial process. With everyone’s help and cooperation, we can ensure Bristol’s best days are yet to come.
Sincerely,Councilman Eric CarlsonCouncilman Ken CockayneCouncilman Derek CzenczelewskiCouncilman Henri Martin

Fitzgerald seeks votes, support for House bid

Republican Jill Fitzgerald, a candidate for the state House in the 77th District, released this open letter today:

To my fellow Bristol residents:
Jill Fitzgerald
I am running again for State Representative because I continue tobelieve that we need more relevant and proactive representation thanwe have been getting. This is a very ambitious undertaking since Ihave a full time job as legislative aide to Senator Welch in additionto my own part-time bookkeeping business, and I take my service to theBoard of Education and my family very seriously.
When I accepted the nomination, I did so with the understanding that Iwould step aside if someone else came forward, because I was concernedthat I could not run as aggressive a campaign as I would want to. Butthat was not to be, and I stand as the committed candidate runningagainst Chris Wright.
I offer the people of Northeast Bristol a very clear choice forrepresentation in our state legislature. I have had the privilege ofworking here in the legislature since the beginning of 2010. Thisexperience has led me to understand how essential it is for us to havemore balanced representation. We cannot continue to justify theimplementation of policies that put our financial future and publicsafety at risk.
I have chosen not to participate in the public campaign financing, soI am maintaining a very low-budget campaign. I will work at gettingmy message out to the best of my ability, and I will not neglect myother roles that were previously mentioned. (I think this is how allcampaigns should be run).
If I am elected, I will leave my full-time position and serve myconstituents whole-heartedly. I need your vote and your support tomake this happen. I look forward to discussing where I stand onissues with anyone who is interested. You may email me atJilltfitz@gmail.com.
Sincerely,Jill Fitzgerald

After Letter Boxing we went to a chocolate factory and got some chocolate and then everyone was thirsty so we got some slurpees and headed back to the house where we decided we needed to explore the old train tracks by the house.
Everyone, even Alyssa walking down the road.
So that was how we spent our 6th day there.  With lots of walking and hiking.  It was a fun day.  So fun we did it all over again our last full day there.  Come back tomorrow to see how that went.
