Showinga newfound willingness to lend public support to a nationwide push to raisebreast cancer awareness, Mayor Art Ward announced Thursday that he would flingopen the door of all five city fire stations later this month to helpfirefighters raise more money .Ward saidthe city’s fire houses will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28 “sothat the public can buy pink t-shirts in support of the efforts toward breastcancer awareness.”“I will bethe first in line to buy a t-shirt,” the mayor said, “and encourage allresidents to join me in supporting this important cause.”The move wasannounced at a press conference during which Ward gave up his opposition tofirefighters wearing the shirts on Thursdays in October and threw his support behindtheir bid to raise awareness and funds.Firefighterssaid they are seeing a surge in t-shirt sales aimed at raising money for theSusan G. Kormen for the Cure, which is receiving all the proceeds. They saidthey will have to figure out how to make sure there are enough shirts availableto meet the demand.Sean Lennon,the fire union president, said he’s been getting calls and emails from all overthe country from people who want to buy a shirt to show their support for thefirefighters and finding a cure for the deadly disease.“My hope isthat this controversy ends with a positive result and I look forward to lendingmy wholehearted support toward this effort,” Ward said.
